HudsonAlpha to expand Encyclopedia of DNA Elements Project

Today the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, a nonprofit genomics and genetics research institute, has been awarded a four-year, $6.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the next phase of the Encyclopaedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Project, a fundamental genomics resource used by many scientists to study human health and disease.

BSC simulation code CALIOPE 'goes further'

In a recent editorial, Nature Geoscience has highlighted the work of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center on a simulation code called CALIOPE, which provides 48-hour air quality forecasts for Spain and Europe. The piece, published at the begging of February, highlights the health problems associated with air pollution which not only affects developing countries but many of the world's major cities.

Diamond Light Source appoints new head of scientific computing and a new head of beamline controls

Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron, has recently appointed Dr Andrew Richards as its new head of scientific computing. He joins Ulrik Pedersen, who became head of Diamond’s Beamline Controls Group in September. Alongside the Data Analysis and Data Acquisition Groups, they are responsible for delivering the computing capability to underpin the science facility’s cutting edge research and operational activities.

Cray appoints Stathis Papaefstathiou to senior vice president of research and development

Supercomputing company Cray has announced the appointment of Stathis Papaefstathiou to the position of senior vice president of research and development. Papaefstathiou will be responsible for leading the software and hardware engineering efforts for all of Cray’s research and development projects.
