Nautilus 7.0 enhances data archiving and plate planning

Version 7.0 of the Nautilus Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) improves speed and efficiency in data archiving and plate planning, according to its makers, Thermo Electron.

The Nautilus LIMS is intended for early stage discovery in biotechnology research. Its new archiving functionality allows users to transfer data automatically from active tables to archived tables and back again. Multiple archives can be created, so all data related to a specific experiment or study can be collected in -- and more easily retrieved from -- a designated archive.

Plate Plans are used to automate activities carried out on single or groups of plates. Users can monitor the progress of experiments, group and organise plates, execute actions and add workflows to be carried out on the plates within the plan. In addition, image results are now supported in Nautilus, which enables image files to be stored in the database as results and visualised within the application using the Result Browser. Essential to high throughput laboratories, visualisation speeds interpretation and analysis of results.

Amartus releases TargetWatch versions 1.4

Amartus, a life science software company based in Dublin, Ireland, has released version 1.4 of its TargetWatch SDMS, a web-based Scientific Data Management System (SDMS) that enables organisations to capture, track and share data in a secure centralised warehouse.

Life scientists now work with complex data sets in many formats generated from heterogeneous systems. The TargetWatch SDMS helps researchers bring data together in a meaningful way by providing a secure centralised location where research teams can capture and exchange data in a project-centric manner whether they are in the same building or across the globe.

GenoLogics Introduces ProteusLIMS 2.5

New automated data capture and configurable processes are features of the new ProteusLIMS 2.5 introduced by GenoLogics Life Sciences.

Intended for proteomics and systems biology research, significant innovations provide labs with exceptional flexibility in configuring novel workflows on the fly and automating data capture for end-to-end lab process, research workflow, and data integration.

Users can track their samples through complex workflows with container management, aliquoting, pooling and complete sample genealogy; contextually associate proteomics data, whether gel images, HPLC traces, spectra data or protein searches; track sample biosource and experimental conditions; and integrate with clients' and collaborators' projects and scientific data.

Automated data capture reduces manual work, transcription errors and cost. It supports instrument data capture, including spot pickers, digesters, spotting robots, mass spectrometers, and protein search engines.

Neptune tests the waters

Water testing laboratories need Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and to assist them, Autoscribe has produced 'Neptune', a new configuration of its Matrix LIMS.

Developed with inputs from several large US metropolitan water districts, Neptune uses the configuration tools from Matrix LIMS. It has no custom code and no special scripts. The differing requirements of each laboratory are satisfied by changes to the configuration rather than using custom code.

Watson talks to Xcalibur

Thermo Electron has introduced a new bi-directional digital interface between its Watson Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Xcalibur mass spectrometry software to promote compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards and the regulations for keeping electronic records, 21 CFR Part 11.

The interface ensures the rapid and secure transfer of analytical run information directly from Watson to Xcalibur and the return of results back to Watson without an intermediate file. An XML-based instrument gateway facilitates data transfer between the LIMS and the mass spectrometry instrument control software.

Enhancements in the Watson 7.2 release, developed to support Oracle 10g, include: study sign-off; custom study fields; and analysis of solutions and preparations. Watson is specifically designed to support drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic (DMPK) studies in drug development.

The Xcalibur software is a Windows-based data system, providing instrument control and data analysis for the entire family of Thermo's mass spectrometers including the Finnigan TSQ Quantum triple quadrupole mass spectrometer series. Xcalibur enables quick, efficient acquisition and processing of data as well as results delivery.

Infotrieve's lab notebook

Infotrieve, which specialises in content management technology and information services for the life sciences and other R&D-intensive industries, has produced ELN 2.4, an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) that allows experimental data to be securely collected, analysed, stored, and shared among biologists, chemists, regulatory, quality assurance, and records management professionals.

The notebook was founded on the GenSys/ELN, which was acquired by Infotrieve in December 2004. A cross-disciplinary platform, the notebook is compatible with most technology providers and can be scaled to meet the needs of both small biotechnology companies and Fortune 100 pharmaceutical companies. The makers claim that it is the first enterprise-wide laboratory notebook to receive full endorsement from the Collaborative Notebook Systems Association (CENSA). It offers electronic witnessing and digital signature capabilities for intellectual property protection.
