Open Scalable File Systems

Open Scalable File Systems (OpenSFS), the non-profit organisation coordinating the Lustre file system community, has announced the availability of Lustre 2.5. It represents a major milestone – delivering Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) functionality, often a core requirement in enterprise environments. With HSM, customers can now implement tiered storage solutions in their operational environments.

Galen Shipman, chairman of OpenSFS, said: ‘Lustre 2.5 is an important release for enterprise users. HSM allows organisations to define policies to optimise the cost-effectiveness of their storage usage. This is extremely useful for heterogeneous enterprise storage environments.’

Much of the primary Lustre HSM development is due to the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, CEA). OpenSFS provided a test cluster to validate functionality and coordinated test activities including community vetting and testing of the entire Lustre 2.5 release.

Lustre 2.5 also begins the next OpenSFS-designated Maintenance Release branch of Lustre.
