Cornell University joins science grid

31 January 2007

A research centre at Cornell University is collaborating with the National Science Foundation’s TeraGrid to provide an internet interface for the Arecibo Observatory.

The volume of astronomical information gathered doubles every one and a half years, with increasing complexity. It is hoped the Cornell Theory Center’s (CTC) portal will allow the data Arecibo produces to reach a far wider astrophysical community for analysis.

The observatory is used for astronomy, solar system radar astronomy and atmospheric studies. Researchers across the world use the observatory to conduct data-intensive surveys.

CTC will use a 10 G wave, acquired from the National LambdaRail (NLR) to link into the TeraGrid. CTC’s connection will provide the high bandwidth connectivity necessary for external access to the Arecibo dataset.
