UK grant to boost operations research

22 January 2008

A £12m initiative in the UK will bring together four British universities – Cardiff, Lancaster, Nottingham and Southampton – to expand the UK’s contribution to operations research (OR).

Operations Research combines advanced analytical methods, including mathematical and computer modelling, to find the optimal solution to complex problems. For example, OR techniques could help find techniques to maximise the bandwidth of a network, or to minimise the risk of a financial investment

The LANCS initiative, supported with a Science and Innovation Award from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), will bring about a significant expansion of the national research base in OR to build new research capacity and help UK industry to compete in the global market.
