Tokyo Tech upgrades its supercomputer

The Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) has upgraded its Molecular Dynamics Simulation Acceleration System (known as Tsubame) with the acquisition of ClearSpeed Advance X620 accelerator boards.
This is the first in a series of upgrades for Tsubame, which is used for applications ranging from nanotechnology to natural disaster prediction. The institution required easy-to-program accelerators that were energy efficient and IEEE 754 accurate. The accelerators also needed to be compliant with the molecular modelling application Sander Amber.
The new boards are compact, meaning that the power of the centre has increased with little difference to the size of the system and a minimal difference or its power consumption.
The system will be accessible to every professor and student at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, as well as to a wide range of researchers throughout the world.
